Support for 512MB frame buffer? Is this vaporware speak or is nVidia actually contemplating releasing a 512MB video card??

Also, I noticed that on my GT there are two check boxes on the actual PCB itself denoting whether or not it's a 256MB or a 512MB model.

Anyone know anything about this? Or has this already been discussed and I've missed the bandwagon? :D
 
On yeah...this notation is for the 66.81 drivers just for reference. I just got it off of the Nzone driver download page.
 
Maybe theyre just preparing for the future? Im sure EVENTUALLY we'll get to 512MB...
 
there are workstation cards with 768mb and 1Gb of ram on them (mostly made by 3dlabs I think - their Wildcat series)...I wouldn't be too surprised if we saw 512mb cards in the near future.

If they do, it'll be a Quadro... the pro cards don't really have an effect on consumer part pricing.
 
Can the frambuffer possibly be spread between booth cards in SLI? I'd think that this would be a bit on the impossible side but more impressive things have happen (in the world in general :))

Even if it could it wouldn't matter. The framebuffer is tiny compared to the amount of mem on a current gen graphics card.. 8MB on 1600x1200 32-bit. 16MB if you're using an FP16 framebuffer. That's still small compared to 256MB. In an SLI configuration I expect both cards will have the same data. Most of a card's mem goes to textures, and despipe the SLI link being reasonably quick it's still much faster to access local memory.
 
NVidia had a banner a while back at a convention saying they will have 512mb cards. I am expecting them to be released once the memory shortage has been resolved...
 
Interesting that only the GF6 series is WHQL.

The 5xxx and GF4's aren't *that* old. ATi has been qualifying everything back to the Radeon 7000 every month for a long time now.
