what triggered this sudden massive drop in SSD prices? It's almost as if flash became half the price it was for months before overnight.

Whatever the cause, I'm certainly glad that it finally happened. Chances are, the next computer I'll build will have a 240GB, or larger SSD, and a 2TB+ mechanical HDD.
 
Probably popularity and saturation of the market. There like 20 different brands all selling the same thing. Plus flash is becoming the defacto storage medium for just about every device out there.
 
improved reliability also as I read the first gen ssd's had higher failure rates which meant warranty cost more to provide.

was talking with one of the enterprise SSD companies the other day. They will soon be releasing a 2TB 2.5" drive that from their testing (100% write 24/7) it appears the 6gbps link isn't fast enough for you to write enough data to cause the cells to fail.

pretty awesome.

Overall drop in flash prices combined with the SSD makers wanting to capitalize on the hard drive price spike to gain more traction in OEM and enterprise markets. When HDD prices were pushing $30/TB, the cost/benefit ratio for an SSD was poor, but when things spiked to $100/TB, the business case for using SSDs in more places started to become stronger. In order to keep that momentum, the SSD makers have been pushing hard to get prices down as much as they can.

fairly certain it will be 9mm or 10mm though designed to fit in 2.5" JBOD shelves. if enterprise is getting that though i would expect similar capacities soon for consumer too.

Would be nice to see those, if for no other reason than putting downward pressure on the 512GB models that never seem to go on sale :)
 
The reason is as usual with memory chips : overproduction. Either the manufacturers will shut down some plants or a natural disaster will (tsunami, earthquake, floods), and prices will stop dropping or even go back up.
 
won't happen. everything is pushing volume right now. phones, tablets, soon you'll see laptops with only SSD if for nothing else the power savings. sure the new macbooks and the new ultrabooks are currently premium high end devices but that won't last much longer.

same thing with ram, virtualization is driving the massive volume. that isn't slowing down anytime soon.

and this worked for me.

last week I was not considering an ssd.

Then a hdd died.

HDD's still too high in price, so decided to buy ssd and my current boot hdd partition will replace the function of the dead hdd.

So yay flood? :confused:, in all seriousness while we still can't get raw space cheaply like we did before SSD's needed a boost, HDD is a serious performance bottleneck in most PCs

They will try to do this, similar to what the oil producing nations in OPEC (oil cartel) do when prices drop, but individuals within the cartel (in this case, NAND producers) are incented to cheat to capture volume from others who are cutting back, and competition just ends up keeping prices down (as long as they are making a profit at current levels).
 
DRAM manufacturers (the same companies that make NAND) have been convicted of price fixing in the past, so you can be sure they'll try it again, more discreetly.

I pretty much got my ass handed to me not too long ago on this board when I suggested mechanical drives would go away. Some members here doubted bulk storage in SSD varieties any time soon. I can't stand slow mechanical disks and looking forward to those 2 TB units.

Mechanical drives won't go away, because they are still the cheapest option for mass storage. At some point in the next few years, they will become relatively rare for laptops and desktops as SSDs become more and more affordable, but for enterprise storage, mechanical drives still rule.
 
The OS drive will surely be an SSD in a few years for every computer, but HDDs for storage (even at home) are here to stay. And of course if more and more people shift from local storage to cloud storage, it's still on hard drives and will be as long as there isn't something better in space/$, which will never be NAND based SSDs.

Not every computer. I wouldn't count on that unless comparably sized SSDs either become much more reliable, or much cheaper than their HDD counterparts. Most people don't value the faster boot times at the expense of hundreds of GB of storage space. In an office or the typical home environment, the faster speeds are largely meaningless.

In laptops, the increased robustness of solid state storage may trump that of spinning disks, and make the increased expense worthwhile for many users. Not so much for the typical desktop user. There's also the compactness of solid state that makes it more suitable for very small systems like tablets and thin notebooks. There's no real reason why the 2.5" drive form factor is necessary any longer with the chip densities that we have already.
 
I think ti would be a bad business move for ssd pricing to go upwards, ssd's are still priced at a premium even if some consider them cheap at the moment and they have yet to achieve market dominance, they should get market share first before even considering price fixing. (yes I consider reducing supply to manipulate pricing as fixing).
 
Fairly sure Intel RST will be the norm for the common mans boot drive for a while to come.

Sure, today. But not in a year or two. Some application servers don't need bulk storage capacity, they need enhanced spindle speed. If you don't think this is true, look at the current generation of 1U servers from IBM, HP, Dell, Supermicro, etc. They're stuffing 8 x 2.5" bays into their units for a reason and I'd wager it's not for multi TB boxes.

Once the reliability issues are put to bed with affordable SSD's, you'll see mechanical drives vanish at the next hardware refresh cycle. I also believe mid size companies might even try to leverage them to negate replacing their whole server(s).
 
Basically Western Digital and Seagate screwed themselves longterm by hiking the price of HDDs.

It was just sheer greed. Hence why the past year I've only bought in one HDD (a Samsung) and the other half dozen have all been SSDs.

As I can now buy a 120GB SSD for $75 which works fine for most folks, why bother paying that for a 500GB.

I said OS drive, you can still have a HDD. And indeed with mini form factors even small laptops can have both an SSD AND a HDD.

daglesj : well clearly you don't need any real capacity. Personally I need 5-6TB/month so I buy HDDs very often. What I did with the floods was stocking up on every used hard drive I could find that had still a decent price in october/november, and waited a few months with that 25TB reserve till HDD prices went down to around 50€/TB and now I'm buying new again even if it's still far more than before the floods (less than 30€/TB then, but the € has lost value against the $ so that doesn't help).

When I order in new kit for customers I show them the speed of SSDs in my laptops etc. they are really impressed and want them. I then spec a 64GB or 120GB for them.

They then say "oh is that enough?"

I then ask them to open up the properties of their existing PC/laptop HDD that they have been using for the past 6 years and tell me how much they have used.

There is usually a pause then a slightly deflated reply of..."erm 20GB!"

Only had about two customers where an SSD wouldn't be financially viable right now, so far. Sure there are folks that need a lot of storage but in reality they are few and far between. I have personally realised that I do not have to carry 'all' my data I've ever had around with me all the time. No point. Just take what you need.
