Has anyone ever used THIS before?

There is no real difference between most educational copies and the ones you buy off the shelf elsewhere but keep in mind it -is- just an upgrade version. So, if you're looking to keep your friend Legit, he'll need to have a full version of a prior version somewhere.You may also want to check with your school as often times the school store will offer Microsoft Educational Software at extrememly reduced prices.

I won't speak about the morality issue here really except to say that you're the student, is your friend? You may also want to read the license to make sure you don't have to uninstall it when you finish your education to remain legal; Last time I checked you didn't have to but you never know.
 
before buying that, i'd even try calling your college's it department and see if they sell winxp to students. i've heard of some pretty cheap prices for students if you buy direct from colleges.

the academic upgrade shouldn't be any different than the retail verson

seriously, we have access to acedemic verisions of ms software at my school and its full blown versions of the programs. i think that vb.net does have the label acedemic license on it but other than that it has all the feature of the regular one.

My university provides a VLE XP Pro for $5 :D Every student copy I've ever seen is good for as long as YOU own them (per the EULA).
 
Definitely check with your university first. We get XP Pro and Office 2003 for free.
