This may be a pretty noobish question but Ive never done a lot with Raids before besides the one I did with my SSDd in my sig but I want to build a Win 7 Pro based server / PVR / HTPC. Ive looked around but cant really find a solid answer but my question/s are
1. For redundancy Raid 10 over Raid 5? Im leaning more towards 10 from what Ive read.
2. If I build a raid with the mother boards built in raid (either 10 or 5) and if and when a drive were to fail, if I remove the bad drive and put a new one in will it automatically rebuild the new drive and get it caught up? Or would I need an actual server mobo or real raid card to achieve this?
Im looking at using 3tb drives. So 4 drives for raid 10 or 3 drives for raid 5 for 6tb of storage.
My goal is to have a system that if a drive does die on me I can replace the drive and the other drives will repair and copy over the information it should have on it. Which is why I am leaning more towards raid 10 then raid 5.
Thoughts?
Thanks in Advance!!
