Hardware RAID (PERC 6/i) or Software RAID (ZFS)?

Right now I have a RAID-6 setup on a Dell PERC 6/i card and it's been running fine. It has a battery backup unit (BBU) so my data should be safe in case of power failure, etc.

However, even before I purchased the card I considered many different alternatives (Windows Home Server, Windows Server [Software] RAID, unRAID, ZFS, etc), but eventually I settled on the hardware solution because I was able to find a used card for cheap.

Well, I've been thinking again about what happens if my hardware card dies. Not only do I need to try to find another (exactly the same) card but I'll have to pay whatever the going rate is for it.

So... I've been thinking about ZFS since it's still gaining in popularity.

What are some of the advantages and disadvantages to ZFS? Anybody have any other opinions?

(By the way, I'm running an 8 disk [1 TB each] RAID-6 array. The disks are just a mis-match of different brands and models but it's been working good for about a year so far...)

I think you have to consider drives failing before your RAID adapter goes, I have yet to hear of stories of RAID adapters dying and taking all the data with them, I am not saying it can't happen, I just think its very rare. Perc cards are designed for enterprise level computing, so 24/7x365 and I have replaced client computers that ran like that and their perc 5i/6i never hiccuped once in 3-4 yrs, but drives did for sure. From what I have read ZFS is software raid, very slow and cpu intensive compared to hardware raid.
