hardware raid necessary for Raid-1?

looking for a Raid-1 setup, will it eat up any cpu cycles if i run it off of the onboard raid controller on the Asus P5WDG2-WS?

It will use a few cycles, but raid is still worth doing. Generally, the only way to not-use CPU cycles, is if you get an expensive raid card with it's own onboard processor.
 
Shouldn't even be noticable.
Heck, I had a promise fastrack ata66 raid on on old BP6 dual-cellary box a few years ago, and it ran swell.
 
what about windows boot times? does having the raid-0 boot off of a controller card take longer than off of the motherboard?
 
The CPU overhead is basically NIL.

However, these onboard SATA raid controllers do not give you the required reliability for raid-1.

The problem is that they have the software twice, in the BIOS and another one in the OS driver, and one doesn't know what the other one is doing. There have been numerous reports how a reboot with one half-dead disk has the BIOS part trash the contents of the good drive with data from the bad one, because the BIOS part has no clue what the OS driver was going to do about the broken disk before the reboot.

Pure software raid is a good option for raid-1 but might be difficult to get for Windows users.

Sometimes it can be faster. It depends on the raid cards firmware, the bios of the system, and in what order the system chooses to poll it's controllers. If your bios lets you turn off unused controllers it can speed boot time. I usually leave a computer on 24/7, so a slightly longer boot time doesn't bug me much.

im a little confused by your wording, are you saying that the raid controller cards dont offer the reliability, or the built in raid controller (one on the motherboard)?

The ones on the motherboard, when used with the built-in RAID and BIOS support.

The ones on the motherboard are fine when used with pure software RAID.
