hardware issue not sure what though

So my brothers had his computer working for awhile, then one day the monitor says that its not getting a signal so we assumed it was his graphics card which was a old 7800gt and got a used 3850 instead. when we installed it, nothing happened. i checked both cards in my computer and it works fine, but his computer will only display a signal when its using the onboard graphics. then i figured it must be his motherboard and bought a new one and the same problem happens with this one, before i run out and make another dumb buy anyone have any ideas?

his build: e2200, 2x1gb ram, antec earthwatts 500w he had a ecs 945gct then got a ecs g31t
 
It looks like you have tried a number of things (the video card, the motherboard). Have you tried a different monitor or VGA cable?
 
so i just tried again with the g31 and the integrated graphics isnt even working, maybe its a dead board :/
 
check the monitor with another machine and/or his machine on another monitor
 
also just for shits and giggles.. check the ram as well.. when my crucial ballistix tracer started dying.. the system would boot up but no display.. even with onboard video.. its worth a shot to check if thats the problem before going out and buying more stuff..
 
thanks for the tips, i tried all of them and its still the same problem of only the onboard graphics working, maybe the pci-e slot just crapped out after a month
 
not sure if this helps anyone help me, but with the graphics card in the pc boots and i can even hear the windows startup i just cant see anything even with a different monitor
 
Check your BIOS for using the expansion slot rather than on-board video.
