I have a computer that is about 3-4 yrs old and as of last night it seems to turn it self off on start up. It does not make it to windows and most of the time not even far enough to allow you into the Bios. I did manage to see that the processor was up around 120-140c which i know is high. I'm mostly curious if this might have caused something to be fried or if I should just get a new heatsink and go from there.
 
120c (if you mean C, and not F) isn't just high, thats near fatal for a cpu and I wouldn't be suprised if it was hitting a thermal cutoff before it even booted.
 
Ya its Celsius. was around 247 F i believe. I figured it was hitting the thermal cutoff im just more worried that there might be Damage to either the Mobo or Cpu and if its worth trying to replace the Heatsink or if its a much larger issue.
 
wow thats hot. when something reaches that high a temp, something could definitely have been damaged, including the sensors. what HSF is the system currently using? If you could find a much better one, then go ahead and try it. If not, I'd RMA that CPU if it's still under it's 3yr warranty; unless you have another board you could test it in.
 
Not sure what you mean by HSF. it seems tho like the old Heat sink is not re-attaching proper so that might have been the issue from the start. I cannot seem to fix it so im thinking about doing a replacement Im just more worried that the processor might be cooked and not wanting to waste money if not needed.
 
What CPU is it? If it's old, you can probably find a cheap HSF on the FS/T forum, or even free.

its the Stock Intel heatsink that came with it at the time. did not think i would need anything better since it was mostly internet and some light gaming. Its a Core 2 duel 2.6ghz i believe and its about 3.5yrs old maybe a bit more then that.
 
The stock should be fine. Take it out an inspect the push-pins. Make sure they're not damaged. Play with them, so you can understand how they work, which will give you some insight into how they are properly installed. If the push-pins are not damaged, try re-installing the HSF. Here's an installation video from Intel. Before you try re-installing it, make sure you clean off the old thermal paste and apply a new layer. Clean off the old paste with isopropyl alcohol and and a coffee filter. Just put a small pea size blob on the center of the CPU, since the pressure of the HSF should spread it out. Also, make sure the push-pins are twisted to initial state, so that when you push down on them, they lock into place.
