Greetings all.

I hope this isn't in the wrong place.

I building a computer for a friend of mine out of some old stuff I have around (and a few new things to round it off) and all was well intil I tried to boot it up.

Damn thing doesn't post, and all I get is a series of evenly-timed beeps.

I've built my share of PCs before and solved many an issue, but this has me stumped.

Quick specs are:
AthlonXP 2700
1gig of 233 Kingston DDR Valueram
Gigabyte GA-7NF-RZ Mobo
MSI RX9600pro
Maxtor 30gig HD
HP CD Writer.
350w PSU.

Anyway, the interesting part is that the HD is what's making the beeps - but connecting my drive results the same no-post situation, only without the beeps.

Anyway, I figured I'd take my problem here before I sink to the lowest level and take it to a "repair shop" with "skilled technicians".

Thanks all.

look at the mobo manual and see if it says anything.

are the jumpers on right for the HD? Tried a different IDE cable yet?

reset the BIOS yet?

try only one stick of ram

Tried that all.

I've more or less swapped all the components with stuff I know is good and I still can't get a boot.

I'm more or lessed convinced it's RMA time.

the HD making the beep, damn I dunno?

take the mobo off the tray and try just having the cpu ram and video on see if it'll post then.

take the battery out with jumper on reset for NO LESS then 10 mins?

Tried it all - We've worked out 2 issues.

The drive is "dead". The beep is actually mechanical sqweek of some sort.

Other than that, all the components work on my other box, (indivigually and all together), and yet don't function on the other board.

It's gonna back and we're gonna build on something else that I know will work well.
(We grabbed this board 'cause it was cheaper and the guy said it'd be a great board - even though it was the last one, and the display unit.)

So yeah, it's going back.

I see no mention of it anywhere, so, have you tried clearing CMOS? Simplest of things yet so many people fail to even give it a chance. There's no reason to plug in any drives when trying to just get it to POST, so yeah... GL.

Yep.
Sorry, I figured listing all the "standard procedures" for troubleshooting would be redundant in this forum. ;)

Anyway, we've got a dead board on our hands. Probably got ESD'd while it was on display.

It's gonna get returned and I'm gonna buy the replacement myself. (Rather than sending the real owner alone to mess up and buy a display unit again).

Thanks anyway, all.
