Ok.. so I'm wanting to set up a simple server... for storing music.. and sharing it among many other (3) computers... is this possible?.. Could the 3 comps stream the music simultanously?...

What hardware would be needed.. (minum)? cpu speed, ram...

I have some parts.. 500mhz and maybe a 700mhz cpu.. I'm not sure about ram.

I'm really wanting to buy nothing other then hd's and maybe a raid card if needed..

My question is how do I know if the mobo I have will take raid or not.. and also what RAID set up do you suggest?

One of them has one, the other one has two

Look on the motherboard and check its specs.

You don't need RAID to run a music server at all.

I doubt if it has built in raid since you only have one or two ide connectors.
You can buy an ide or sata raid card fairly cheap.

But, if its just holding music, why go raid?
A standard hd is fast enough for music, and you really don't need fail over for just music.

A 500 mhz will be fast enough to serve music to alot of people.
We had a dual 200 mhz ppro serving 700 people as a file server at a school i worked for.
it's more about connectivity, (network speed and hub or switch) and speed of hard drives.
7200 rom at least.

Right now i have a 400 mhz p3 with 192 ram, a 15 gb ata drive for files and boot up, and an 18gb scsi drive for files, and it serves music and music videos to 4 people without a hitch.
The biggest thing i would recommend would be to make sure you are running 100 mb ethernet on a switch.
That will give you plenty of bandwidth for music.
