Hardware Devices going un-detected

I come back to my computer after dinner, and it won't play sound. I was playing music on it before this and there seems nothing logical that could have triggered this. It says it cannot detect the hardware or there is no hardware for it. So I re-download the drivers (fortissimo II), install them, no effect. I open up my box, wiggle/make sure all the wires are secure, remove the hercules sound card and put it back in. When I turn the computer back on, the monitor says "check signal" and then goes black! So it seems like something has cuased first my sound card and now my video card (geforce 4) to become not detected. any advice?

That doesn;t sound promising.

The first thing I would check would be your power supply.

Also, you could try re-seating your memory, PCI cards and CPU.

You are going to be in troubleshooting hell for a bit my friend. I feel your pain.

ya know i had this problem just this morning. i booted it up and my soundcard wasn't detecting. so i turned off my comp and more or less just kinda pushed it... then booted it back up and it detected.

computers are weird.

1- i have reseated the video card and sound card many times

2 - it is very possible that some undetectable static shocks have damaged the integrated circuits, because i ignorantly worked on carpet in a hot low humidity room with an aluminum case and did not ground myself or touch case a lot.

my question is, could this kind of undetectable static damage really cause the monitor/sound card to completely not work at all like this?

3 - how do i check the power supply? i have a 420w turbolink PSU. the fans, front panel lights, and motherboard standyb light all come on. there is no beep from the motherboard though. also, the fan speeds vary in RPM for about 30 seconds after rebotting. is it normal to have no beep and adjusting fan RPM like this? I seem to recall that the fan would always do this, but i cant rememeber if it used to make a beep or not.

answered my question about static shock...the answer i have been told is yes.

also tested my PSU...tolerance is about 1.5% which is good.

im screwed arent i

Yea... if you aren't careful when you have your hands in your machine, you can zap components.

Don't know why the machine would have stopped working in the first place, but it sounds like it is *possible* that the bulk of the damage happened when you attempted to fix it.

Remember, though... this is only a guess... I wouln't give up hope yet.

What you will need to do now is start swaping out parts to see what works and what doesn't.

Remember to get a static strap so you don't kill anything else.... :)

Ok. Well, I'll get onto thw swapping part tommorrow morning im bring up another older computer...so ill be keeping you posted.

i think ill try to make a makeshift static band.

if you have another rig try putting that hardware into it to test.
if it works fine youve got a problem somewhere else.
