Hardware demanding games

First off I want to mention that being an adult with a job I am not as on top of the latest games as I was 10 years ago, so if I’m missing obvious choices just let me know.

What are some good games that will push and punish my hardware other then my graphic card? It seems that games today, or at least the ones I look at, place look pretty over everything, seemingly even game play which is sad.

The reason for this post is I was looking on the egg at processor and memory upgrades and frankly I can not justify it, what I have is working just fine, and that’s an unacceptable statement for a system that is over a year old J

As for games I like, 6 months ago I would of said MMORPS / RPG but it has been so long since I have found a game I liked that I have decided that maybe I need to get out of that genre. I like FPS as long as they are not linear. I hated CoD4 because I had to follow the story line.

Any suggestions?

Grand Theft Auto IV is probably the most demanding PC game right now, in terms of overall system requirements like the CPU. STALKER Clear Sky and Supreme Commander can dish out a beating too.

Crysis is obviously the most punishing game for graphics cards.

The games that'll tax the CPU are mostly RTS stuff. Here's from the top of my head.
Supreme Commander
World in Conflict
Red Alert 3 (Possibly)

This is called poorly coded port... there is nothing demanding about that game, a 7800gtx on PS3 can handle it and PCs cant?
lol
Wake up buddy ;)

I'm not convinced this is so accurate.

Don't they use the Euphoria physics engine? Have you seen that thing at work? They can blend animated bodies such as ragdolls with actual physical simulation, so a knocked over pedestrian can right himself as a blend of physics and animation, also taking into account the stress and materials of the bodies around them and based on decisions linked in through AI routines. Also if you go to their website you can read that ragdolls abilities and animations can be based of a central nervous system which can react and alter the animation to damage that is inflicted on them. Not to mention decent physics on all the cars and static objects littered around the map, and all the particle physics that go on etc etc.

Not to mention bucket loads of AI to control all the peds and cars on the road and their behaviour. The AI isn't exactly stunning, they have fairly rudamentry behaviour and reactions to you and the police and accidents around them, but it's done on a fairly big scale, not only for peds/cars you can see but also the ones which have to be generated around you as you move through the city (this has to be done before they're visible in order to avoid slowdown) The AI of the people that deal with the rules of the road, stopping at lights, moving to avoid other stray cars and obstacles...

The game we built for quad core and that was the recommended specs for the game, it ran pretty reasonably on quad core machines, I enjoyed the game very much. Those with minimum specs got a less than stella game experience, and is that a surprise?

I don't think we have any decent comparisons to GTA IV right now so it's hard to say if it's optimized or not. I will however agree that the game isn't very scaleable, it's low end is quite high as not everyone has quad cores yet, but thats a completely different argument to optimization.

I would have to say Stalker Clear Sky and World in Conflict.

Crysis and Stalker: Clear Sky are also some really heavy hitters.

And I agree with Frosty regarding GTA 4. On top of that though, graphically speaking, there's a whole lot more detail in the PC version that is significantly different from the consoles:

Edit: Bah! Krenum beat me by a few minutes on S:CS. ;)
