I recently upgraded my memory from 512 PC3500 to 1GB PC4000 memory. When I put the memory in i went into BIOS and hit optimized defaults just to check that everything worked properly, and it did. So I went back into BIOS and put AGP mode on, save and exit and now it boots up to the screen after it checks my cdrom and hard drive and it freezes. If I go back into BIOS and change 256 MB to 64 MB and 8X to 4X i am able to get to the windows loading screen but it dosent load.

Is this a problem with the memory, video card, motherboard or something else. I dont know what else to do and I dont really want to pay someone else 80 bucks an hour if I can fix this issue myself.

$80 an hour. Most hookers don't charge that much.

I also have no idea what's going on.....as your description is quite confusing. I don't know why everyone feels the need to hit optimized defaults instead of just going in and setting the options themselves. Set the memory to SPD, the ratio to 1:1 and the AGP to 8x. Try 128 MB as the AGP buffer.
 
Try loading standard default settings in bios, not optimized defaults. Then tweak options from there.
 
Setting SPD to 1:1 let me start up in AGP mode. But now i have horrible game play. Once i open up any 3D application the picture lags and i get random artifacts. About 1 minute into a game the screen will freeze along with the sound, then start up again. It will keep doing this every 20 seconds or so then the screen will freeze permanitly.
 
Why did you go pc4000. You are not overclocking. You are on a 533fsb are you not? Therefore you could have saved a ton of money on memroy. Call Kingston and see if their pc4000 can run at a much lower fsb since your not where near an 800fsb never mind the 1000 fsb that pc4000 is designed for? Even running pc 3200 on a machine with a 533fsb is a waste no?

Your 533fsb is 133fsb quad pumped so ddr266, othewise known as pc 2700 would be much more appropriate. There is the argument of future upgrades and it has merrit if you were buying ram with that in mind but pc3500 has plenty of headroom
 
Do I need to upgrade my Processor and Motherboard to get the memory and video card to work properly? Will this fix my problems or will upgrading only create more?

I dont need to know that im wasting money on memory that i dont need. I realized im throwing money away on useless hardware when i blew 415$ on my graphics card when a 150$ card would do.

I just would like to know how to fix these problems so i can finish Gothic 2.

Flash the BIOS to the latest version, then clear the CMOS.

Once your done that, go into the BIOS, and set everything correctly. Problem solved. Part of building your own system, is knowing how to configure the BIOS.
