Does the pic boot? Yes? Then it is likely compatible.
Not so simple. Ubuntu has trouble with certain realtek chips for example.
There are some websites with Ubuntu recommended hardware IIRC but you're best off just trying a live cd.
What do you mean? If it boots, then you're okay. if it has problems and doesn't, then you're not.

There's is an official Ubuntu Certified list for hardware compatibility that you can check out here, but there's non Ubuntu-certified hardware that should work fine too. Ubuntu tosses notebooks/laptops in with Desktops.

Your best bet as B00nie said, just setup a Live CD or Live USB and boot to it and select "Try Ubuntu" and see if the various functions all work. There's a chance you may have to install proprietary drivers for certain network cards to work, otherwise? All hardware should basically work without any extra effort.
