I have a dual core atom 1.6ghz with 2 gigs of ram that I had been using as a small vent server and file server for a few years now under windows xp home, but I have recently used it to make a pfsense box and I love it, but now Im without a file server and vent server. I wondering if it would be possible to run Ubuntu 12.04 server with pfsense if vmware, while maintaining use of vent and samba for file sharing.

Not sure about VMware, but I have a server running the Proxmox Virtual Environment with a PFsense VM, server 2008 domain controller VM, and an Ubuntu terminal server VM. It has been running fine. The RAM is going to be your limiting factor though, I think. Processor time can be shared more easily than RAM.

There's lots of good info on the pfsense forum about running it in a vm.
