HardOCP R520 benchmarks

Sounds only fair that you go to www.ATI.com and use their latest drivers, as well with www.NVIDIA.com

www.nZone.com = owned by www.nvidia.com, it is simple the "gamer" website offshoot. For the past 6 months or so the nZone.com drivers have generally provided better IQ, performance, and often less bugs than the drivers on nvidia.com. For instance, right now nvidia.com has 78.01 which have shimmering on high quality for the 7800GTX, while nzone's 78.03 drivers have this bug fixed.

Where did he say anything about running his games at 1024x768?? Sheesh, the guy says the 81.26 driver runs fine for him and you're all over him with this 1024x768 fantasy of yours.

Fantasy? This was his reply when I asked him to run a game at something other than 1024x768. And I wasnt all over him, I simply asked him to test a res other than 1024x768.

i dont know what the hell you are talking about. i said that on MY machine the desktop was ok as were several games. i added that on MY machine i picked up 10% on 3dmark.
thats all. i made no blanket statements
you replied - well try that at this and this and that, because you have researched this thoroughly i guess.

now again you are making wacky ass assumptions on what i run my games at. no i am not trying to tell you anything except that "these drivers run ok on MY machine, the desktop is ok on MY machine and some games run ok on MY machine and i picked up 10% in 3dmark05" now if they dont do this well on yours, i sympathize, and hope you get better results in the future, or with other driver releases. thank you and goodnight.

Why wouldnt you desktop be ok? I didnt say anything about your desktop. All I did, was ask that you try a real res, something that someone would actually use. 1024x768 is not a res someone would likely use with a X2 and GTX.

I didnt make any assumptions of what you run your games at. Again, why wouldnt they "run your desktop" ok? Im glad you're happy with the extra 10% 3dmark score. Those of us who dont care about 3dmark, would rather see some game tests. I would like to see some 1600x1200 or even higher. If the gains are still there, then thats fantastic. I would think hard about selling my 3700+ for a X2.

edit,
dagon11985 said:
Why ? Because 1024x768 is the standard resolution people use when benchmarking their comps.

You're joking, right? The only standard that is for, is 3dmark. Which is meaningless to me. Show me a review of a GTX from a good hardware site with 1024x768 in the mix for a game.

LOL... now you are reaching even further and coming across desparate.

BTW: what exactly will the 81.26 drivers bring when the cards are tested on FX55's/FX57's?

Desperate? I'm just commenting on why Brent's rationale to use nzone drivers if they improve iq/performance makes sense based on past history of nvidia.com/nzone.com drivers. Did you actually read the whole thread before replying?

Though 81.26 appears to bring most performance to dual core systems, apparently it offers some increases for single core systems as well from those who have tested it.

So the issue has been resolved..

I did.

I was like... What?

I thought that at first as well. The first thing that popped into my head was when your pics got leaked from, Doom3 was it? When someone figured out how to get the pics from the review, when the article wasnt posted.

Brent is basically telling you that he will not use drivers that don't render textures and have IQ problems. Oh yeah, that would explain the two current "leaked" drivers on the internet/nzone/guru3d right now.

Continuing to beg for these drivers on a card round up is making you look even more desparate. Maybe if NV could actually release a driver with improved speed minus all the hacks to reduce IQ, everyone will win. I for one would feel better about my 500.00 investment in NV technology. Until we have a officially released driver that doesn't miss textures and have IQ problems, please stop your compaign.

Are you worried your NV stock will go down on Oct 5?

come on... it take NV six months to get WHQL drivers released so that would be unfair. :p

Too bad for them I guess. You need to have a level playing field, at least in an official review on a major site like hardocp. And I'm sure ATI has the same delay with its WHQL drivers as well.

Wow Tranny.... You are really reaching with the R520 coming very soon. First you quote penstarsystems and now theinq.

I'm running the 81.26 from guru3d and find my desktop doesn't like to redraw everytime......

this is why i stated that my desktop ran ok. christ, take a pill or something. read my posts. i never stated anything about my game resolutions anywhere in any posts except to point out that you have no idea what i run my games at.

As for the original question asked about Rel 80.

We use officially available WHQL drivers UNLESS a company has officially made publicly available a beta driver that provides a performance or IQ difference. For example if NVIDIA posted a new driver on NZone that fixed a bug, or made performance or IQ better than the WHQL driver on NVIDIA.com. In that case I'll use the NZone driver because it is officially supported and publicly available through NVIDIA. I will not use LEAKED drivers that have ended up on Guru3D or whatever.

I use what is available at the time I start testing the cards.

That's a good standard to use Brent. Glad to see [H] abiding by this.

I suggest you reread both my posts and Brent's posts, as you've clearly missed the point.

P.S. - 80.40/81.26 drivers are not currently available on nzone.com

LOL, you think a high dollar niche part will affect either company's stock? Let's wait for one company's product to take market share from the other's before we start acting like Warren Buffett.

Slider19 said:

WHQL doesn't mean jack squat except that Microsoft made some money off the drivers. For example, the current WHQL 78.01 drivers on nvidia.com are inferior to the "beta" 78.03 drivers currently on nzone.com as their IQ is not as good in High Quality mode. Over the past 6 months, the nzone.com drivers have allowed nvidia to release bug fixes, IQ improvements, and performance increases without waiting the long amount of time and large amount of money WHQL costs - meaning that generally the "beta" nzone.com drivers are overall superior to the "final" whql nvidia.com drivers.

definitely. me and the thousands of other hardforum users that own nvidia stock are quaking in our little boots and dreading the thunderous wave thru the business, enthusiast and oem communities that the launch of the next generation ati will bring. while we are on the subject, do you think the mets will make the wild card or not?

Terra...

Indeed.... talk about a way to get attention

specially since alot of people are waiting for the benchmarks

To make it a little more clear.

I go to www.nvidia.com and see what driver is the latest there, I'll use that driver UNLESS there is a newer one on NZone which has some kind of performance, IQ, or major bug fix. If it does not I'll stick with the WHQL driver on NVIDIA.com.

I go to www.ati.com and see what is the latest driver there. Each driver they release each month is WHQL so there are no problems there.

The only time I'll use a driver NOT publically available is in the case where I HAVE to in order to install it. For example new video cards being released by NV or ATI, you have to use a beta driver they provide you because it contains the new Device ID's of the card you are testing.

I make note of all of this in the test setup page where I note the driver version and if it is WHQL or Beta.

I will NOT use leaked drivers that are downloadable from sites like Guru3D.

So to summarize, I only use drivers from nvidia.com, nzone.com, ati.com or from ATI and NV themselves for new cards that need new drivers to operate.

So, IF an 80 series driver IS available....will [H] be running tests on a dual core cpu?

I get the sneaking suspicion these new drivers will turn up on nzone shortly before the official r520 launch...probably not in time to run benchmarks on them...but in plenty of time to ruin some of ATi's buzz a couple of days later...

Personally, I don't care how fast R520 is...clearly ATi is capable of making a competitive card...the question is how fast can they produce it and what price are they prepared to sell it at...

perp and fallguy you guys remind me of a quote I saw on these forums...

Arguing on the Internet is like the special olympics....
even if you win you are still retarded!!

Why does it seems like every thread in the vid cards turn into a bitch fest? Arent forums where you post your opinions?

Wow, thats never been used before. Not last year, not two years ago, not even five years ago. Really, thats a new one!!

Its not a b*tch fest, we did state our opinions.

Since you didnt get it the first few times, its my opinion that it doesnt matter if these new drivers raise performance 10% at 1024x768 in a synthetic benchmark, nor a game. Very few people who have a X2 and 7800 will be playing at 1024x768, if any. Get it this time?

I actually have a dual processor system...and I was trying to see what kind of gain I could get with the 80 series drivers...but they just crash...:(

They should probably wait till ATI has multi threaded drivers to do that. Hardly anyone has a duel core CPU yet and it wouldn't represent the two cards fairly.

R.E multithreading on CPU's, it's really all about the game developers and how they program their games to utilize two CPU's

drivers can only do so much

I aint using those buggy ass 81.26's, that I can tell you. I am fairly happy with the 78.03's because they DO indeed fix some IQ issues when using high quality settings.....

Now when NV or nZone gets some 80's out....sign me up. :D

Actually I had a dual processor machine 10 years ago. While "Joe Sixpack" may not have a dual system, many people who come here do, or they soon will. I don't have a FX processor I still have an old "Barton", yet I would not expect them to test on that.

Most if not all the upcoming processors will be dual core. So if you are going to test the latest and greatest card, you should test it on the latest and greatest system.

That 5.8 Cats have them to. Not to sure if it was fixed with 5.9

i tried the 81.26 drivers. my desktop was ok. also gta, bf2, doom3 and farcry ran ok. i also got around a 10% bump in 3dmark05. i dont know about a 40% increase just from drivers tho.
of course, this is all relative. it depends on the resolution you use. even tho i use very high resolutions in my games, it would be impossible for me to tell if my framerates were 10% better. i will just take it on good faith that the manufacturer of my video cards has only my best interests at heart, and my games are running around 10% better also. IN THE ABSENCE of any evidence showing that i am not also getting a performance increase in my games, i will choose to believe it is so. if you have a problem with this, please walk north until your hat floats. thank you.

I think we at HardOCP created the standard...

if hardocp doesnt have 81.26 drivers included in their tests then ill just have to look somewhere else for 81.26 benchmarks, :p

I'm sure both will launch new drivers at the r520 launch.

Nvidia will definitely lauch a new driver to increase performance of its existing cards. And it MIGHT even launch a 7800 Ultra depending on how fast the r520 is.
