Harddrive temperatures

Hello,

I just recently bought a 2tb caviar black harddrive and I was wondering if the temp on it is too high, it is currently being used as a storage drive and it's temp is at 52C

That's pretty high if it's your idle temps. Do you currently have any airflow over the drive?

My drives usually sit around mid 30's while idling and low 40's while actually being used with decent airflow over them.

Yea I have airflow over the drives, I have a 830 samsung SSD along with a 1tb caviar blue that is dying according to crystaldiskinfo and it's not nearly running as hot as the 2tb caviar black

Try to see if you can point a fan directly at it to see if the temps go down.

I think i have some extra fans i could try to mount somewhere for my case, thanks just wanted to see what some other people had for their temps on their caviar blacks, i know they ran faster just wasn't sure if they were hotter or not

Give that a try and see, if that doesn't work, you can contact WD and see if it's supposed to be running that hot.
They do run hotter than the Greens/Blues, but it shouldn't be that high, especially at idle.

My Black drive (an older 1TB version) runs hotter than the rest of the drives in my system, I wouldn't worry too much about 52C (126F) , especially if it's Summer and your ambient temps are higher in your house.

According to the specs, 52C is within the 0-60C operating range. (Page 2)

I was just worried because the temps according to harddrive diskinfo said caution and I wanted to know if the temps were normal or not, thanks for clearing it up

What is the ambient temperature in the room the computer is in?

Here is HDD AFR vs. temperature from a 2007 google study

You can see that the AFR is going up above 45C, but the error bars are large above 45C because they had few drives operating above 45C (and virtually none above 50C).

I'd certainly be worried that operating an HDD above 50C could be having a significant effect on the AFR.

The temp in the room at the moment is 76 but it fluctuates because we have the AC running at the moment, but at night when i use the computer the most the room temperature jumps anywhere between 76-82
