Harddrive not detected

Ive got a 80gig maxtor hdd as my slave. the master is the 40 gig that came with my HP computer. Right now XPpro isnt detecting that i have the 80gig slave connected. when i put my old other 80 gig as the master then xp detected the slave. but i switched back to the 40 gig master and alas, no slave. any idea what could be causing this?
 
the jumper on the back of the 40 is more than likely set to cable select move it over to master and your problem should be solved unless the drive is hooped
