Harddrive not being recognized

Hi. Recently purchased a Maxtor 300GB. I installed it and after I boot up Windows, it'll automatically install and tell in the corner it'll say that it is ready to use. I go to my computer and the drive is not there. (I've got the jumper set to slave and my old harddrive as master). Device manager is no help either. It says that the "device is working properly", but of course it's nowhere to be found. Bad harddrive? Any clues as to what is going on? I'm gonna set it to master and see if I can install an OS on it. Thanks for any suggestions
