It's a brand new Maxtor 120gig 7200rpm 8meg cache sata harddrive with a brand new oem version of XP w/ sp2 included on the disk and the little red light blinks steady during idle. What causes this? Anyway to get it to stop? Nothing picks up spyware or virius. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

Like, an OEM version of XP preloaded on a drive? That's a curious bundle. Who sells that?

Run FileMon and see what's being done to the drive.

Also, doesn't Maxtor give some diagnostic utilities that would let you know if something is going wrong with the drive itself?

No, it wasnt pre loaded. I bought the OEM version from the egg the same time I bought the hdd so they got here at the same time. Thats what I meant. Sorry for the confusion.
