harddrive getting to hot!!!

Look at Samsung Spinpoint drives for cool and quiet. Or stick an intake fan in front of the hard drive.

How much can you spend?

Care about performance?

Have you considered a laptop drive?

200gb is okay more, better!
i can spend up to $400.
i am willing to forget about performance so i can have peace with my drives going bad all the time.
laptop drive, that's interesting, are talking about the 2.5" ones, do they have sata ones?

well then, with that amount of money, you can buy the new WD 500gb drive (i think this is the right one). it is the new king in quiestness and coolest. but u search other places too to try and get a better deal
 
Forget about Maxtor.

At idle, Hitachi T7K250, followed by WD2500__, Samsung P120, Seagate Barracuda 7200.__, in that order.
When seeking: WD, Samsung, Seagate, Hitachi.

You'll need two laptop drives to achieve 200GB. Even with two laptop drives, you'll still be ahead on power/heat, but it will cost more. SATA 2.5" drives are pretty common nowadays, and don't carry much of a price premium.

Hitachi rules on idle power use in the laptop roost, everybody else is pretty well tied. Hitachi's mobile drives tend to be above average power users during seek, like their desktop drives.

**EDIT** Someone above mentioned WD's 500GB drive. It's awesome during seek on noise/power, but pulls a pretty hefty >8 watts at idle. Both the T7K250 and WD2500KS come in under 7 watts at idle.
 
i had 2 160gb seagate drives but now one failed, do drives in raid get hotter?

i feel sorry buying one gigantic 500gb drive and have it fail on me later, what is a drive that runs very very cool?

what do you guys think about harddrives coolers? i have one and i am not sure if it really works now?
 
Just bought the same drive like a week ago. I tested it this AM by copying about 10GB of MPEG from one drive to the other. I also left it running over night just to keep it "working" it is nice and cool to the touch compared to a 320GB SATA Maxtor I have.
