harddrive--getting info off it

I recently messed up my mobo on my comp. So I orederd a new mobo and processor. (was upgrading anyways). Also orederd a new SATA HD. My question is this:
How can i get all the info off my old harddrive? I'm pretty sure when all the pieces arrive, I should connect the new hd to the new mobo and have a fresh install of Win Xp.
I've heard some people mentioning make the old hd a slave to the new one... Does it matter if they're both not SATA's ?
Is there any other alternaatives?

Master and slave does not exist for SATA hard drives. ALL SATA devices are considered master. Just install the other PATA hard drive as if it were the only one in the system.
 
I would install XP on the SATA drive first, and then once XP is up and running, connect the PATA drive to get the data off it. I'm not trying to make assumptions, but your questioning is pretty basic....which puts you in the category of the people who later post the following thread entitled:

"Formatted the wrong drive...Help get my data back!!!!"
 
Well since I haven't upgraded my comp in 3+ years this is the first mobo and HD I'm getting that is SATA. Didn't know how compatible/incompatible it might be with my old hardrive.
As for first connecting the new sata and new mobo with a fresh XP, yes I know this and said so in first post.
So the question is after I get this system up and running with the new equipment in it, it should not cause a problem to just install my old hardrive into the mix? (even tho it has xp on it?)

p.s. never seen the term PATA...,

No problem at all. As far as the system is concerned its just another hard drive.
PATA = Parallel ATA
SATA = Serial ATA
 
When you connect your old drive just check in the bios that your new drive is still the boot drive.
