Harddrive detection problem

I'm trying to install a 40g maxtor harddrive as the primary harddrive of a pentium 3 system but the mother board will not detect it.

The Asus P2B-D motherboard will not detect a 80g maxtor harddrive either.

The motherboard will detect a 6.8gb harddrive though

Any suggestions welcome.. only thing i could think of is a bios flash, which i have not done yet.
 
i'd try the bios flash also.

do the 40 & 80 gigs work though for sure? maybe try a diff ide cable :confused:
 
in addition to what was previously suggested, ensure you have the jumpers set correctly and the drives are plugged into the correct position on the IDE cable (ie master goes on end plug and slave goes onto middle plug).

but sounds more like a BIOS issue than anything.

UPDATE: IDE location corrected, I guess I was typing to fast...I was thinking it though :p just tired from a day of gluttony, tennis, and target practice
 
I always thought the master is on the end and the slave is on the middle ones :confused:

at first on my home rig, I never cared which way it was. Then when I'm at work and didnt care, I noticed there was issues with that. When I looked at the dell cables, the ends were labled master and the middle was slave. I tried that and it worked.
 
alright, so i've got the new bios file and the flash utility on the floppy and bios set to boot from A first, but when i boot it says

Remove disks or media
press any key to restart

any ideas?
 
Don't mean to sound like I'm loopy here, but put those bios files on another freshly formatted floppy.

Really. Could be the floppy in this event. It happens. Couldn't hurt to try another.

If you still have trouble after that, we'll look for another possible problem.

P.S. You might also try the EZ Bios that comes with the Maxtor Utility disk, since some older boards don't recognize drives over a certain size.

i'm a idiot, i didn't format it as a bootable DOS floppy

i reformated it and everything flashed successfuly and can detect the harddrive now :)
