Well it may be, but check the usuall stuff, connectons, etc, power.

Good Luck Man

It may be dust, but not entirely. Let it cool for a good while, you should be able to pull data off of it before it starts ticking again.
Co-worker had this happen to her older Dell, I was able to salvage everything, even thought she was just paranoid cuz the machine was doing fine for over an hour.
Once I got to reinstalling, it started making noise again and was dead!

so i let it cool down, dusted it, etc. and whenever its connected to the PC, it takes forever to boot. I also hear the clicking which isnt as loud as before or as frequent, but still there...any ideas?

well ... like I said ... you should only do this to restore data, don't really expect it to heal itself.
I've got a laptop drive that got overheated once, it sounds like a tiny machine gun now, but it's still running without corrupting any files.

thing is, the PC isnt seeing the drive...any ideas? will knoppix or something be able to see it?

If you cant get the drive working perhaps this story will give you hope.

About half a year ago, a hard drive of mine started the click of death and due to previous experience I assumed it was now dead.
However, I didnt want to lose it so booted a HDD Regenerator CD and told it to fix anything it found wrong in the vain hope it might recover something.
HDD Regenerator found a ton of bad sectors, it seemed like it was going to take forever.
A day and a bit later, it finally finished.
I rebooted and the drive was back to perfect working order and has been fine ever since!

Spinrite also sell a tool which does the same job as HDD Regenerator.

I just had the exact same problem. When I turned my computer on this morning and it got to the windows loading screen it started to click.click.click, but wouldn't go any further. So any more replys to rayman would be a great help to me also =]

wow . never heard of HDD Regenerator ... sounds impressive, unbelievable, but impressive!

:(

HDD Regenerator didnt recognize the hard drive, it only found one drive which is the boot drive...

ah well...

glad it is helping some you guys ;)

oh dear, that isnt good.
Can you try in another PC just in case?

Rayman,
some people have done the freeze trick, but it's if the HD's not recogned... hmm ... not gonna do it

BTW, not sure if you've heard of people swapping the controller boards on HDs, if you've got access to another drive exact as yours, you could try swapping the board out to retrieve your data.
