Harddrive crash?

My notebook started running really slow the other day so I created a restore point so if I lost everything I could go back to that day but my hard drive totally went out.

The error I get when my computer loads is this


PXE - E61 : Media test failure, check cable
PXE - M0F : Exiting PXE ROM
Operating system not found

and when I load the restore cd , it tries to load but eventually says no hard drive found.


Should I just buy a new hard drive or what should I do? Is there any chance I could get the data off of it. I found one company that was 400-2200 bucks for data retreival but I was wondering if anyone knew of any cheaper places.

Can't you just retrieve the data yourself? If you get a new hard drive, say, then install the OS on it can't the old one just be plugged in so you can copy the data from it (if it is recognised, that is)?
 
Does your BIOS recognize the disk? I'm afraid it may not be that simple...
 
I'm no expert,but I thought PXE was a network boot option.....
Why would it be trying to network boot?

It is. My guess is it's no longer detecting the hard drive, so it's trying the next thing in the boot order. This will make it practically impossible to recover the data with facilities you'd be likely to have at home or work. If the data is important, it's best to give up trying to recover it now so you don't accidentally damage it more.
 
Thanks for all the help. I think the last way I booted up my computer was safe mode with networking so I try and fix any problems. So there really isn't anyway that I could try and recover any of the data? Should I just buy another hard drive and start from scratch or is there maybe a way to get this drive repaired? Is there anything I can do. I am a senior in college in information systems and really need my pc back to shape to work on projects. I have been using my girl friend's pc for a few days.

I checked the boot sequence. The harddrive is first so I need a new hard drive right?
 
A new hard drive is probably a good start if you need to get the machine operational to finish homework and whatnot. If you need the data from the dead disk, you'll probably have to pay for some rather expensive recovery procedures. Spend some extra money as soon as you can to buy a backup device, too - I think you're discovering why that particular investment would have been worth the price.
 
Thanks, yeah im a college student on a budget so im looking like im gonna order a new harddrive online. I found a 80 gig 7200 which mine was 80 and 5400. It was listed only 79 bucks. Should I save the old disk so if I get some extra money I can get the data off of it. I would like to get my data back but I guess a new hard drive is what I need right off hand. Should I step up to the 7200 or stay at the 5400?

For $79, you can do better. This would be a good choice, at $72. Or if you want absolute cheapness, this. It's only a few bucks to step up to the larger, faster, newer drive, though, so it might be worth it. Saving the money for an external drive as backup is probably better if it comes down to the bigger disk or the smaller and a backup.
 
I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S1712 notebook. That is for a desktop right. Thanks for all the help. I will keep searching for some more drives. I am thinking about upgrading to 2 gigs of ram also. I have 512 now.

Ah, sorry, forgot about that. A 2.5" drive is indeed what you'll want. Still, you can get an 80GB 5400rpm drive for $62, or if you want to spend around $80, 120 gigs.

Edit: 2 gigs of memory may make a big difference in your user experience. I know it did in mine, but I tend to have many things open at once. If you don't do that, you may not notice the difference. Check Task Manager and see how much memory you're using now before you go spending the extra money. A little extra memory is probably worth it, but if you open everything you'd be likely to do at once and only use 300 megs of memory, it's probably not worth the money.
 
The 7200 will take a little more battery life and perform a bit better. Pick whichever suits your needs better.
 
What it's doing is falling over to a network boot because it can't find the hard drive. I see this all the time at work when the IBM's we have lose a drive.

It doesn't sound good for that drive unless it's a cabling or config issue.

Thanks for all the help again. You guys are so helpful. My computer didn't really get hot at all. How much faster would it be to switch to the 7200 because if its not that big a difference then ill stick with the 5400. Thanks again.
 
I am going to order a new hard drive soon. I don't know how different the 5400 vs 7200 will be so I might just stick with the 5400. I was wondering if I needed to update my bios before I put a new hard drive in. I haven't done this to a notebook before. I should be able to figure it out. I just need the new drive and the restore cd right?
