Harddrive - Cold boot massive problem!

hey guys, my computer over the past few months has been taking longer and longer to start up. Sitting at the POST just saying 'Detecting IDE Drives'. After disconnecting the IDE drives and trialing, it is the harddrive which is taking soo long to start...now it was a couple of minutes before it spun and got into windows but its been getting worse and worse.

Ive been told about the bigger the harddrive you have to wait for it to spin up and stuff but i mean HALF AN HOUR PLUS just breaks my limit. Then i realised that when its warmer it boots quicker then when its cold. So lately to get my machine to turn off ive been using a hairdryer to heat up the HDD...but seriously this is ridiculous, what could the problem be? heres the specs of my machine

ASUS A7N8X-X
512mb DDR400 ram (i kno i just got BF2 and i know im getting more!)
Radeon 9800XT 256mb
WD 160gb IDE HDD <-- the problem

Jumper settings are fine, downloaded WD datalife guard tools, did nothing even after running the scans. IDE cable is fine and the power cables are all fine, i dont understand why the harddrive is refusing to boot while its cold?
 
I'd consider getting the drive RMA'd

When's the last time you formatted? Do you have all the chipset/mobo drivers installed? Is your drive partitioned? If not, you should

And whoever told you about the bigger the drive the longer it takes to boot is wrong.

Well, maybe bigger platters. If you still have a 5.25" Bigfoot drive, it may take longer than its smaller, more modern cousins :)

OP, get whatever data you still need off the drive and RMA it. I've personally had dismal luck with WD RMAs but whatever you get is likely to be better than what you have now.
 
Potentially a power supply issue caused this problem, but the drive is certainly defective. If you don't mind, post what brand/series of PSU you have, along with how much current it provides on +12, and everything in your system with a yellow wire leading to it (the big ones are CPUs, VGA cards with molexes, then drives, fans, and lights) and we'll see if a replacement PSU may be in order as well as a replacement drive.
 
RMA it??
Its just a normal 350w PSU the 12 rail is fluttering between 12.6- 12.7
Last time i formatted was feb of this year, its not partitioned, i have all the chipset/mobo drives installed too.

i was hoping i didnt have to replace the drive and psu, but i got a feeling i may have to, can you guys give me some bang for buck alternatives if thats the case of replacement.
