I'm building this baby:

ViewSonic VP201s

Logitech diNovo Media Desktop

LIAN-LI PC-6070B PC Case

ABIT AA8 motherboard

Intel Pentium 4 Prescott Core 3.6 GHz CPU

1GB Corsair RAM XMS2 DDR2 533

GeForce 6800 Ultra PCI-Express 256 MB

But I'm not sure which harddisk to supply my system with? I'm looking fast and reliable storage, I don't need one disk to be 300 gb. I'll just buy more.

The Maxtor 300 GB SATA 7200 RPM 16 MB cache drive. With your budget, you can easily afford it.

I would get two.
A 74 Gig raptor for your OS & games.
Then a +200 Gig for storeage.
That I think is the best combo for speed and size.

Luck........... :D

It's been proven and beaten to death that RAID0 in a desktop system offers no real performance gains, and lowers reliability. I would follow Tigerbitten's advice.

yea, thats what I would do too. raid 0 two 74 GB raptors, and then one giant disk for storage.

Why You Don't Want RAID 0 for a Gaming Machine:

In the “SR Gaming DriveMark… a 4 drive Cheetah array.. lags a single Raptor running on the "dumbest" of SATA controllers by a margin of 9%.”

Discussion of RAID 0 and the very few instances in which it is useful in a desktop machine, gaming NOT being one of them:

Excellent suggestion. May also consider getting 2 of the larger drives for storage and put them in RAID 1 (mirrored) for a little peace of mind against drive failures.

erm... okay, thanks EnderW. djnes doesn't have to jump down my fucking throat about it without backing it up though.
