Hard mouse pad?

I used to use my old Alienware mouse pad and I was recently told that they were made by Func (the old 1030 Original). I was looking into them and don't see too many reviews.

I'm trying to move from my current SteelSeries QcK soft mousepad to a hard pad again. I also plan on getting an optical mouse, maybe the Logitech 400s? What are the differences of an optical mouse on a hard pad vs a soft pad?

Does anyone have any experience with the Func 1030 worth other pads such as the Corsair or 4HD?

Thoughts please! :)

The main thing you have to worry about with optical mice is reflective surfaces. So if you get a hard pad make sure it isn't reflective at all. Some of them are a little reflective and they don't work as well.

I really like the Corsair MM400 because it is extremely low friction. I use a laser mouse on it but I think an optical would work well on it too.

It might vary from sensor to sensor, but here's my experience with the G500:

Logitech G500. It's sensor (Avago 9500 --- also found in Steelseries Xai and Logitech g9x) works best on hard surfaces. I can confirm this, because I was using a soft mousepad with the G500 and it was great at tracking, but when I took the mouse away and just used the mouse on my wooden desk, the tracking became fantastic. I went ahead and ordered the Steelseries 4HD as it was on sale for black friday. According to the Amazon product description for the 4HD / 9HD, they were designed specifically for the Xai.

I bought the 4HD, and it does track really good with the G500, but as for G400, not really sure. I think it uses a different avago sensor, which probably means it performs similar to the G500 (except I read that it doesn't have the built-in acceleration), but I could be wrong. I read this on another forum:

from what i know G400 tracks on any surface

So that sounds similar to the G500 --- works fine with both.

An AWESOME mousepad is the back of a hardback book of cartridge paper, like the books you write in when studying.
For gaming I use a black Daler Rowney 150 g/m2 acid free cartridge paper binder and its the best mouse surface I have found.
Its large, cheap, extremely precise, the mouse slides very smoothly, is more comfortable (less hard) and isnt cold on the hand/wrist.

Thanks for all the input!

Seems like most people prefer low friction here. I assume, for comparing purposes, that this would be something like a tabletop. Obviously it wouldn't perform quite as well, but in terms of low friction, that would be it?

High glide reminds me of my old Alienware mousepad. It was a flat, smooth surface. However, you could always flip it over for the textured surface.

Is the Func still like that where you can flip it over? I never flipped it over...I only ever used the smooth surface. What mousepad would be most like that and are there pros and cons of it?

I picked up a Ratzpad a few weeks ago and am loving it.

I prefer friction over gliding though.

The difference for me is having more control over the mouse.

Previously, I was using a Steelseries whatever that had a gliding surface, but felt like I had less control over the mouse because it took so little effort to move the mouse. I ended up having to put more effort into holding the mouse still or stop moving the mouse with my wrist and arm than I was used to.

I like the tactile feeling provided by the friction surface I guess.

Ahh see this makes perfect sense to me. I sometimes have a fan next to me on the desk which causes vibration and the mouse to shake. I can see that if the mouse isn't completely stable how frustrating that can be.

Thank you for the input!

The Ratzpad is highly recommended. I've had one since I joined some 8.4 years ago, and it's still an amazing surface.

Func 1030 surface is amazing, I've used it since 2006 on all of my computers and recently upgraded to the Func XL surface which I'm very satisfied with. You can't go wrong with Func surfaces IMO.

I have an I-2 Glass from SS. It is a great pad, super smooth. Super low friction, looks like they dont offer it anymore though.

This might be worth a try:
Go to a car scrapyard and buy a convenient shaped/sized car small 'rear corner' window, strip the rubber off, clean it up, voila, cheap glass mousemat.
Get a flat window, not a curved one. Use some of the rubber to make feet.
If your mouse doesnt track glass well, use a fine grain sandpaper to add a texture to it.

I couldnt use glass though, its too cold.
Thats why the back of a cartridge paper book idea is so great, it does everything really well.
It even stops the mouse sliding when you let go if using it on a slightly uneven undersurface like a sofa seat/cushion, yet when you move the mouse, its non stick and very smooth.

I use a RocketFish mouse pad which has two surfaces. On side is "Control" which has more friction than the other side "Speed". I prefer using "Control". I bought it from BestBuy a couple of years ago. Here's a link:

The single picture of the mousepad that Bestbuy has is not very good so visit Amazon to see what it looks like.

I think this is going to be my next pad. I'm using a Mionix Naos 8200 on a Razer Scarab currently, but it tends to stick and then I overshoot.

Tried the Destructor 2, but that was even worse.

So its down to the MM400 and the 4/9HD. Anybody use both?

I have the Steel Series S&S and it is amazing. Excellent glide and tracking on a G500s.

I moved from a bare desk to a cloth to the S&S and it is the perfect hard mouse pad.

Corsair also makes what is essentially identical to the S&S but is ~1" larger in size.

I switched from the func 1030 to the steelseries SP and haven't looked back. When the SP wore out I went to the 4HD.

I have the rocketfish and I like it a lot. My rat7 tracks great on both sides of it despite all the hate on PTE for apparently not tracking on anything ever.

Just bought a Corsair Vengeance MM600 and a Logitech G700s to go with it for Saturday delivery from Amazon, been wanting to replace my mx518 and Ratpadz for along while now, will see how they do.
