*sigh* my folding rig is acting up again. It seems like everytime i get going it does this.

Following specs:
Phenom 2 720
4x GTS 250 1gig
2x 2gig DDR 3 1600
MSI 790FX-GD70
2 hard drive
1000HX Corsair PSU
nvidia 190.xx WHQL drivers
xp x64 sp2

Running GPU 2 client

No overclocking what-so-ever. Basically it will run happily for a half a day or a day and then hard lock. I can turn on the monitor, see a picture but can't move anything, basically it's frozen, further confirmed that it's frozen because i have it hooked up to a kill a watt and power draw is 200 W. It's outside of a case so heat is not an issue. Today I came home from work and it sounded like a jet and the screen was completely dark, power draw was 150 W. I could shut it down via the power button i had to switch off the power supply and then switch it back on. It came back up and it's folding again but for how long?? It's really aggravating, I can't pour any more money into this thing on hardware.

It could be a motherboard stability issue, it could be the memory, or it could even be temperature-related. How are your ambient temps? Try getting some more airflow through your case and see if you can cool the room down more.

No case. It's in my garage so ambient temperature depends on the time of day but it doesn't go above 70F usually. Today was especially cool. It was stable 2 weeks ago but then i switched OS's ( win 2k3) and the problems started. I switched back last night to the original OS (xp x64) but the problems continued. Should i try a vista flavor??

You could try Vista. XP x64 is basically the same OS underneath as Server 2003, so if the issue is OS-based it wouldn't surprise me that it happens using both.

Ugh does that mean i have to make those dummy plugs?

Ya i was thinking about that too. Xp x64 and win 2k3 are basically the same thing with the same windows update.... girr. I actually think it might be one of the windows updates. When i was loading up win 2k3 x64 with windows updates it froze then and I wasn't folding at all, it didn't happen either time with xp though.

Download 7 and give it a go..... that way you wont have to buy anything or use up a activation.

I get free microsoft software through my university so i have almost the entire catalog of windows OS's at my disposal :D

ie i'm running server 2008 on my main rig, why? BECAUSE I CAN MAWR MAWR MAWR. :p

I'm thinking that I read that the downloads for Windows 7 were going to cease soon, so you may want to get those before much longer. If you need the ISO just give me a yell. I've got both the 32bit and 64 bit versions on my drive.

I'm running it at home (64bit) with a GTX275 and it's worked flawlessly for what...looks like it just pushed up unit number 828 about three minutes ago. ;)

EDIT - Just seen your last post - nevermind....looks like you've got access to whatever OS you want to use...

so after more then a week and making zero changes (still running xp x64) I have had zero hard freezes and 100% uptime at 100% load on the video cards. *sigh* i'll never understand it.
