Hard-Drives for Workstation

Hey all,

Right now im planning a build for a dualie opteron workstation. As far as hard disks go, I'm going to ttry to go all out.

I've sort of laid it out, so tell me what you think.

Main OS Disk: Either single 74gb raptor or dual in raid 1?

Swap space: either single 36 gb raptor or 2 in raid 0?

Main stoarge: 4x 250gb 16mb maxtors in raid 5 mabey. i need like, 500 gb's of fast fault taulerant stoarge. i dont know what the best route is.

Temp stoarge: 2x 400gb hitatchi's in raid 0


Tell me what you think. This should be under 2000 canadian (i hope)
 
Forget the 36gb raptors, that's a total waste.
A run-down of the applications/use of this workstation would greatly aid in determining a proper drive setup
 
Main OS Disk: You've made the right choice if you want to stay SCSI free, which judging by your budget of $2000 CDN and huge capacity requirements, that's a really good idea ;)

Swap Space: I hope this is an application specific 'scratch disk,' such as for Photoshop, rather than for an OS swap file. You are better off adding physical RAM than dedicating a drive/array to OS swap files. If it is an app scratch disk, then go with another single WD740GD. The WD360GD is an overpriced dud of a drive.

Main storage: Good call here as well, at least on the drives. Remember that writes will be either slow or CPU intensive with RAID-5 (possibly both :eek: ) unless you get a controller in the league of Acrea or 3Ware. Also, it's no replacement for backups - I hope you know that already ;) The 16MB Maxtors will not disappoint.

Temp storage:Everything I've heard from people wealthy enough to afford the 400GB Hitachis has been positive. Fast and spacious. Good call here as well. Seagate has a drive of this size, but it's SLOW.

Also, if these drives will all be going in one box, I hope you've heard of PC Power and Cooling. They are the only PSU maker I would trust with this many drives. Also, an inline UPS, in the league of a Liebert, will be a must for this system as well. If you have not already done so, I highly recommend that you head to the Power Supply Forum and pick the brains of the people there on what equipment you will need to keep this beefy workstation up at all times.
