Hard drive ?

Hello, I just upgraded my Dish Network box to the new Hopper system, I have the older Vip 722 system becuase I paid for it. It has a Hitachi 500g HD I have no other use of it So, My question is how do I go about converting the 500g HD that is in it to work on my pc? from what I can gather it has an linux file system on it. I tried connecting it to my PC and it saw the drive but there was an error and it hungup on post
can anyone here guide me ? I could use it for a backup drive if its not to much trouble to convert it. Thanks.
 
Is it an internal SATA drive? If you are running windows, install the drive in your machine and you may need to go into the BIOS to activate the port you attached to it. Once it is seen in the BIOS, when you go into windows you will go to control panel>administrative tools>computer management>disk management. It will probably at this point tell you that it has found a new drive and needs to write a signature. Say Ok. You will then see the new drive on the right side, right click on it and choose format (IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE - Make sure you choose the proper drive you just installed and not a different drive which you could accidentally erase.) Fill in the info and click ok/format. You should now have a nice new drive available.
 
Thanks , When I connect it to my PC it hangs on post I cant get into windows , and yes its a sata2 drive no jumpers . the bios see's the drive it then hangs up

Well, the drives in the dish boxes are just standard off-the-shelf drives, so there isn't any custom firmware that should be causing a problem. I would first suggest trying another port/sata cable/power cable to rule that out, but it is possible that the drive is just bad. Does the BIOS hang the machine hard (ctrl-alt-del doesnt work)?
 
I would like to point out that I do kno how to install sata-raid-ide drives, if this was easy I would not be here asking for help. thanks again
 
Update!
I installed the drive back in the dish dvr receiver and it powered up, then I swapped the sata cable to one plugged into my MB and everything worked great. I was able to access it from windows, so I went ahead and formated it.
I was able to drag-n-drop files to it, so now I have a big grin and am proud that I figgured it out myself.
I unhooked it from its receiver and installed it in my PC Thats when the problems started cropping back up, ;(
after installiing it in my PC it stopped working ;(((( there is something screwy going on, it wont spin up unless it is hooked to the dish dvr receiver. I am looking for some firmware for it now ;( Boo!
 
Update 2 I have found that the sleep command needs to be changed to never sleep, anyone kno where I would find these setting? Or a program that would be able to change the sleep command? Thanks.
 
Update 3 I may have found the problem the molex from the dish receiver on this drive has 4 wires , my newer PS on my PC has 5 wires I will change out the molex's to 4 wires and see if that fixes it . because it works great till I hook it to my PS on my PC.
 
Wow! I hoooked up the wires just like they were on a 4 wire molex, red, black, black , yellow and it caused my PS to reset ! so that is not whats wrong, when I hook it to the 15 pin power supply it gives an error. this is begining to be a pain unless someone has info on how to hook it up I am going to trash this drive along with the receiver
 
It sounds like the drive is an encrypted drive. The process you used to get the windows box to see the drive sounds eerily like the old process to "unlock" the original Xbox hard drives that were hardware encrypted.

Ok, did some more checking... This drive is never going to spin up as-is outside of your dish box. Here is a link to a thread on dbstalk http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=134857&page=2 which has links and info how to reset the drive out of Power-On standby mode - start reading about message 40 or so. Another repair fix is to boot hdat2 http://www.hdat2.com/ with the /w (spin up) command, and use the ata command set to set the APM Powerup in Stanby to disable and that's that.
