So I bought a 250gb SATAII Maxtor DimondMax 10 off NCIX.com for abouy $130 after tax and shipping (CAD), and I got it home and put it in. It was my first SATA drive ive ever had and installed. I plugged in the SATA cable to the mobo, attached the SATA power cable to a molex and plugged both into the drive. I had it set as secondary to my primary 40gb Western Digital PATA drive.
I used the drive for about a week as storage, where I installed all my games and put all my video files and songs (Yes, the songs were legal, copied from my CD collection
). Then I heard a clicking sound comming from the SATAII drive. This increased in severity and the computer froze for about 20 seconds every time it clicked. Eventually I got a "HotSwapping Error" in Windows, and the drive stopped working completely. Even teh BIOS didnt detect the drive.
So I RMA'd it, and got a new one (Or what I suspected was a new one) back. I plugged in that one, and all was good.
About a week later, the drive made the same clicking noise twice while the computer booted. I was worried, but it didnt do it again. Now, about a month later, the drive is clicking and freezing again, along with dissapearing and re-appearing in Windows.
At this moment the drive is still working. All I know is that this should be a new drive, my motherboard only supports SATA 1.5gb/s, and I have the same problem.
Anyone have any ideas? Could upgrading the BIOS help? Coult it be another defective drive? (I wish I had wrote down the serial to compare) Anything I can do?
