I keep my PC on the floor, so i really dont have any way to tell when my hard drive is cranking away. I am trying to think of a mod or way to monitor the HDD activity on my desk with my computer underneath.

Anyone have any ideas?

I was thinking getting a metal box and mounting some LEDs in it, and make it detachable from the main box.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Sure, doesn't sound like a problem. Just take some long wires from the motherboard header to the LED panel on your desk.

You could potentially have hard drive activity flash one of your keyboard leds. Personally I would probably find that extremely annoying, but it might work for you. This would be done in software, btw.
