Guys my roommate just offered me $60 for my wd 80gb 8mb cache HD. I current use that drive for my os, games and apps. I have about 50% free atm. I also have a 120GB WD i use for media. Would it be a wise upgrade to switch to a 36.6gb raptor? Guys that are running it did u notice a big jump in access times? I will be using serial ata but not raid. I could also get a 120 or 200GB dirve if you think thats better. And no im not going to get 2xraptors in raid 0 (yet). Thanks

hmm well that aint entire up to us...up to u.....u need more than 36.6GB then no dont get it....if u dont need that much...fuck yes get that shyt man....
 
i can easily fit the os, apps and a few games on 36.6 is the speed increase worth the money and time (ill have to reformat 2 comps)
 
I'm going to say no. A single Raptor doesn't offer very much over the WD 8 MB drives. I bought one, and ended up putting it on a shelf in favor of my 120 JB drive. I ran a bunch of benchmarks, and wasn't impressed at all. I wouldn't go for a Raptor unless your buying 2 for a RAID array.
 
what abour getting another WD120 and raiding them. Im a noob when it comes to raid but ill learn if need be.
I just check my benchmarks in sandra...im scoring about 30mb/sec, raiding 2X WD 120 would get me about 70mb-sec and 2xraptors about 90mb/sec. Maybe ill get on raptor now and a second at a later time. Im doing research on campus and about to apply to dental school (~1000+). So maybe went i get accepted? thanks for the help

You'll see much more performance out of a RAID0 array with two 120 GB SE drives than one Raptor.
 
djnes thanks for ur comments, would I have to buy an identical drive (ie another 120gb WD). Any other thoughts.

For stability's sake, it's best to buy an identical drive. Same cache, speed, size, manufacturer, etc.
