Hard Drive Transfer

I just got a Toshiba Laptop for free because of a failing hard drive.
My laptop is a Compaq with a bad GPU (Nvidia).

I would like to to take the harddrive out of my Compaq. Copy the entire thing to my desktop hardrive. (Like using DriveCopy or something) and then wipe it and copy the contents of the Toshiba Laptop to the Drive and install that in the Toshiba.

BTW, the Toshiba's original hard drive will run and stay active for between 5-10 minutes before freezing my desktop computer.

That save me the cost of buying a replacement drive (new) for the Toshiba. And yes I know that they are only $40 for 250gb.

Anyone see any problems?

Not really worried about getting the info off the drive, I can file copy a little at a time. I pulled 20 gb of music and photos off for someone. I need to get the system directories reliably onto the compaq's hard drive and save the info from the compaq. But I have frozen a drive defore.

...any reason you're trying to clone a f'ed up drive as opposed to just reinstalling the OS?

I mean - you don't seem like you're trying to save it for someone. Seems like a lot of headache to deal with just to get the machine running for your own personal use.

If I were in your shoes, I'd try doing it via something like clonezilla. Clear the data off the good drive. Hook them both up to your desktop and boot from a livecd...and pray.

Don't have the original OS disks, if the machine even came with them. Need to either use the OS stuff off the drive (which like I said I can get, but it's a long task) or install a virgin OS and use the manufacturer drivers.

Boot from a livecd??? Don't need to SATA is my secondary drive channel. MB has PATA onboard and I've got a SATA add-in card.

I'd just install the OS again. Even if you have to go download drivers, it will be less of a hassle than dealing with a dying drive. IMO of course. Maybe I just give up too easy.

I mentioned the livecd because clonezilla comes as a livecd. It is a great app...
