Hard drive transfer question

Ok, so I am kinda new to this. Usually I would just buy a new drive and start moving files, but in this case, I have a lot of stuff that I need to keep current.

So I just bought a new system. AM2 Athlon 64, Asus M2N-SLi mobo, 2 new DVD-RW drives, 2 new eVGA 7300 video cards, and a fresh 320gb hard drive. I also am trying to transfer two hard drives to the new system (one samsung 250gb, and one maxtor 200gb). The 250gb has all of my system files and many program files I am looking to keep.

Everything is put together with the exception of the hard drive cables being connected.

Is it possible to configure the old drive to the new system without having to reformat it and starting over? If not, is it possible to load XP pro onto the new Seagate 320gb, and then somehow plug in the old drives to transfer files (and then reformat the old drives for storage space)?

Any help is appreciateed. Thanks in advance.
 
the best would be installing a fresh copy of xp on the new drive, with new drivers for chipset , video card, sound, ..... and so on. and then copying your important files on the new drive, or keep it on the old ones just as you like.

I guess that is my question. After I install the new drive with a fresh version of XP, do I just plug in the old drives into the new board? Do I need to change anything on the drive to accomplish this? They're all SATA I drives.
 
yup, just install your os on the main (new) drive with the old one disconnected (so you dont write over it). then plug everything in for your old drive and then move any documents you need. but why even move the documents you need? just keep the old drive in the system and put files on there. i have several drives that are coming up on 3 years and continue to work just peachy (*knocks on wood*).

Thanks for the help. I really just want to move certain programs and files that are currently linked to the c: drive. And many of the files that I use pretty regularly, I would want on the new drive, mostly due to reliability issues I've seen in reviews about my older drives. Plus, its gives me an excuse to clean out the junk I no longer use.

now remember, you cannot just move a program and expect it to work in windows. you need to install it to that location.
