hard drive testing

I have a few questions regarding the testing software released by all the major hdd mfgs (seagate/maxtor, wd, samsung, hitatchi, etc.) and i am wondering:

1. Aren't they the same programs with the respective company's logo on it? i.e. they all do the same thing, so test results on one drive using two different company's programs should be the same, correct?

2. Do jumper settings affect the test results? Are you only supposed to test drives that are set as masters by the jumpers?

thanks in advance!

They are not necessarily the same programs, but some portions may be very similar in function though. I'm not sure if the results would be the same if you're using a non specific testing program.

You can test any hard drive connected to your system regardless of the jumper settings.

the reason i ask is i test parts for a living at a small computer parts warehouse. our repair vendor has been claiming some hard drives as REPAIRED and they still fail testing.

they have said it is because i have been only using WD's software for all drives, and because of jumpers.

i want to call them on this because i knew they were full of shit, just needed a few second opinions

The manufacturers diagnostic software is the GOLD STANDARD for the proper functioning of a hard drive. If it fails their test, it is suspect at best.

Some manufacturers diagnostics will test other brands, but why bother. Just go to the OEM's website and use their software. That way you are sure. Just label the different floppies or cds that you burn and they will always be handy for a quick test after the initial download. Some have Winblows versions, but I prefer the version that boots up into the diagnostic.

While they should run with other drives connected to a system, I prefer to have only the drive under test connected when I am testing. That way there is little chance of something else like another drive or a jumper conflict affecting the test. Most SATA drives do not have jumper settings anymore anyway. Just PATA drives. If only one drive is connected, less chance of a problem.

I would feel much better about calling foul on the repair vendor if I was using the suggestions above. Try asking them what tests they are using to certify their repairs and a copy of the test report. That will let you know if they have their act together.

Good luck.

Don
