Hello,

I just added a new drive to my 2 bay Synology NAS.

The old drive is a Western Digital and is currently running at 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

The new drive is a Seagate and is running at 136 degrees Fahrenheit. It also currently has a SMART warning.

Code: 
ID 190, Airflow_Temprature_Cel, Value 042, Worst 009, Thershold 045, Status FAILING_NOW

Drive should be under warranty, just bought it from someone here on the forums.

I'm assuming this is a bad sign for a hard drive and it should be replaced?
 
Is the new drive a 5400 or 7200 rpm? Was the old one 7200 or 5400? That is a bit high if ventilation is good and the other drives are within tolerances so you should run the seagate seatools on it and get it rma'd.

I have seen a few drives at work that hit 50C+ under load. One of these systems is in a wiring closet. Instead of an RMA I would find a way to improve case airflow over the drive.
 
dres - I would expect that if the current drives are running at 90F, that the airflow in the enclosure would be OK already.
 
This is in a Synology 211j, which seems to have good airflow (big fan right at both drives)

The two drives are:

ST31000340AS
WD10EARS-00Z5B1
 
Well, that is one of the infamous 7200.11 Seagates. What firmware rev is it currently at? If it is less than SD1A then first update the drive. While thermal issues were not one of the issues addressed, faulty SMART data was.

I bought like 75 of them (or same series) at work in 2008/2009. Since then I have sent back 20 to 30 of these for RMA. Some of these 20 to 30 I have RMA'd more than 1 time..

A month ago I just got my first upgrade from a Seagate RMA to a 7200.12 however the drive was DOA from the RMA. This is the second DOA drive from an RMA this year.. So I have to RMA it again. I have a another bad drive waiting so they are both going in the same box off to the Seagate Shipping dock in Texas. And what I mean by DOA with this drive you can write to the drive however every two full pass writes it forgets (can't read) 100 or so sectors you have written scattered throughout the disk..
