If I buy a 6gb/s HDD will it work on a 3gb/s MB by just defaulting to a slower speed?
 
Yes the ports are compatible. For any mechanical hard drive it will have no real effect on performance, as the fastest hard drives are under 200MB a second and SATA II is capable of 300.
