Hard Drive shreading service

SSI makes some pretty crazy shredders. Would be fun to use them. :D

But yeah I find it's kinda a waste, when the drives could just be formatted and recirculated throughout the company, either as desktop drives or perhaps backup drives. I guess the issue is if they get in the wrong hands and end up off site. Then again assuming they were pulled from servers/SANs a single drive would be useless even if the data could be recovered as it's 1 of many in a raid set.

If it was me I would do a multi pass zero+random, then just reuse them. But guess there's all sorts of weird political/liability stuff going on.

That's exactly it.
Our data destruction policy specifies that all disks are run through a degausser and then they are shredded in-house. Then we pay to dispose of the e-waste. I just put 50 drives through that process, the majority of which worked fine and could have been reused by someone in some 3rd world country.

Recirculating them through our org isn't worth it given the low cost of new drives. For desktops we buy new SSDs, and for backup drives we replace drives every 3 years. You don't want to run mission critical backups on hardware that has 30,000 hours on it already.
