My mom's old athlon 1400+ system died after 4 years of 56 celsius idle temps which fried the motherboard capacitors. Anyway the hard drive has been running winxp home for those same 4 years without a format. Now if i try to boot from it in the new system it bluescreens after less than a second of the windows loading screen. safemode and hooking it up to another system hasnt worked and i was just wondering what tools i can use to get the files back off of it. Im pretty much a noob when it comes to troubleshooting and this sort of thing so your help will be appreciated.:)
 
I have a similar problem, I'll be here waiting for a response from someone who knows what they're talking about. =)
 
Does the drive spin up? What happens when you plug it into another machine, specifically? Is it detected by the BIOS? Windows? Can you open the drive in Explorer? How big is the disk in question (in GB)?

 
If the drive isn't damaged and is detected by Windows, you should be able to slave it on another PC and just pull the files right off it. Check your jumpers. No need for safe mode on the secondary machine.
 
The drive spins up, is detected by the bios and by windows but when i try to access it through my computer it says the disk is not formatted, yet if i try to boot to it it will start to load windows(before going to a bluescreen) so i know it is formatted.

As for the safe mode comment i was saying i tried to boot to the HD using safemode but it will also bluescreen me.
 
Probably a simple logical problem, then. Try any of the software recovery tools capable of scanning FAT32/NTFS. Use the search function on this forum to find recommendations.
