ok here are my specs

MSI Neo2 Plat Mobo
AMD 64 3500+
6800gt
1 gig of mushkin RAM
40 gb HD... samsung i tihnk

heres my question(s)

i bought a new hitachi HD (both HDs i have are SATA) and it is 120 GB. what i want to do is make the 40gb one my windows "system" drive and the 120 my storage for music, video, games... etc. is there a way i can do that without causing a large loss in speed. i ask about a speed loss bc i would think that the cpu when searching for a file would have to look thru the system drive first then the storage, causing slowing. also do i need a SATA/Raid card or controller to do this? AND would i have to erase everything on my 40gb to do thi s?

one more. right now i just have the 40gb and i partitioned it 20/20 and installed windows on one and now when i go to disk cleanup and defrag and stuff it says that its a 20gb!?!

err, you shouldn't need a PCI SATA card (I'm assuming your mobo already supports SATA).

As for your 20GB disappearing, I think you just didn't format the other 20GB.

Just go start, run, diskmgmt.msc, and you should see the unformatted drives there (they won't have a letter assigned to them). Give it a format, it will be assigned a letter, now you have access to your other 20GB.

Now from what I can understand, you have two HDD, one is a 40GB, the other a 120GB. You want your 40GB to be your boot HDD. Question, why did you partition it in the first place? You could have easily formatted the whole 40GB to boot, and be left with a secondary 120GB HDD.

As for your speed question, I'm not sure why you think you would lose any kind of speed. Sounds like you're using your 120GB for backup storage. Shouldn't do any harm.

Last but not least, if there is anything you would like to keep from your 40GB, just install the 120GB, format it through Disk Management, and then copy all the files you want to keep on the new HDD. Then you can reformat/reinstall windows on the 40GB if you want, or keep it like that until you need to reformat, either way.
