currently both (2) my hard drives are using 1 parallel ata connection .. the question i have is .. can i switch over to serial ata without causing any damage? would i need to reformat? or is it just plug n' play?

the main is the OS with all the programs, etc.
the second hd is storage

btw both hd's are ULTRA IDE ATA/100

If it is an ATA drive how are you moving to SATA? Or are you talking about purchasing one of those adapters?

The secondary drive should be fine but windows may not like the OS drive being changed so SATA.

Well I assume you have SATA ports available, first of all. Please tell us what motherboard you have. Further, yes you can "migrate" data over from Drive A PATA to Drive B SATA, but in the case of the OS you probably should just reinstall.

I recently did that and it was easy as 1-2-3 with the floppy supplied in the retail hard drive kit from Maxtor. Had a ATA133 drive with WinXP on it, and it was upgraded to SATA2 Maxtor. The provided floppy loads the necessary files for SATA and copies your data (including patritions) from one drive to the other. Piece of cake.
