I am building a PC or a friend and am going about it in such a way where he wants to retain his 60 gb harddrive and everything on it.

The PC itself is quite a substancial update. More Processing Power, more RAM, better video card, etc.

He, however, wants to retain the info on the drive.

If I just put that drive into the system what would happen?
Would it even run?

what do you suggest?

He has Windows ME (yeah, I am going to upgrade him a bit).

Any info would be great!
 
Yeah, it'll probably work. Though you'll probably have to uninstall vid drivers and chipset drivers because you're using a different video card and mobo.
 
as said above, more than likely it will work (may need to reactivate windows if it's XP)... also worth noting is that your performance will be pretty shitty (compared to a fresh format) because getting rid of drivers after upgrading everything is ridiculously hard to do with any real success... you can remove the programs, but a lot of the reg entries and such will hang around...
 
He's running ME, the performance hit you get by changing mobo and stuff and having driver remnants will not be noticed. :D

(Cause, you know, ME was crappy)
 
The trick to moving the HDD over without running into driver conflicts under 9x or ME is to remove everything under device manager prior to moving the HDD.

Once the HDD is in the new system and boots, Windows will detect all the new hardware and ask for the drivers. You may need to reboot a couple of times in order to get everything. As a final check go into the device manager and check for any conflicts or devices detected that do not have any drivers associated with them.
 
Personally I have done what you are talking about many times. If you intend to upgrade to xp don't worry about getting drivers to work and it will boot and work. It just will not run fast untill you upgrade to xp. The first boot will take time though as windows tries to reconfigure itself for the new hardware. Follow SJConsultant if you are not upgrading windows soon but if your are XP will totaly install without any conflict from ME since it will not upgrade the OS but replace it. If you are changing chipset manufactuers or are chainging from Intel to AMD or vice versa use more caution but ME should still be able to adapt and boot the first time. It may however need several restarts to install new drivers. Also it helps to have the motherboard, OS and video driver CD handy incase it needs them to update the drivers.
