I have two external HD's: WD and Maxtor. They are internal HD's places in cases. My question is: how can I prolong thei longevity? My pc is always on. Would it be better to turn them off regularly, e.g. once a week or every night, or is it better just to let them run all the time?

Also, what are the signs that indicate that the HD is almost to expire?

I don't think turning off your pc every night or weekly will prolong the death of your HDDs. The disk is inactive when the pc is idle so there is no wear and tear.

Symptoms of a dying HDD in my experiece are:

1. HDD will start getting louder and louder and will sometimes make strange sounds.

2. If there are damaged areas on the disk, you will get BSOD or corrupt file errors.

There are probably more symptoms but these are the ones I have seen.
 
Starting and stopping a drive motor is much harder on the motor than having it run constantly with good cooling, alot of drive manufacturers mention power cycles in the data sheet.
