Hard Drive Problems

I have an IBM DeathStar (my second one, the first one crashed) that I'm having trouble with. Windows was acting goofy, and over the period of a few days I installed winxp several times. Finally, one time, I booted my computer and the BIOS reported that there was no OS installed. The BIOS recognizes a hard drive of the correct size, just not an OS on it. A Lindows install CD also recognized the drive of correct size, but I obviously did not want to format since it would delete my data. I tried to put it in a friend's computer as a secondary drive but it wasn't recognized by that computer. I also attempted Knoppix but I couldn't figure out how to access the drive from it. I'm not sure if the drive is working properly or not. Does anyone know of a good way to get my data off of the drive or diagnose this better?
