i have a maxtor 80 gig that ive had for a couple of years now. right now its on the sirelell 2 adaptor on my NF7-s , i am trying to do a low leval format on it using maxtor software called maxblast. ive done this on this drive about 15 freakin times in the past, because i love getting a fresh machine running. but right now it comes up with an error saying Batch files nested to deeply and it wont work...

ive also tried powermax which is not detecting my drive.
ive also tried using windows format in my computer right click C: and format and it comes up with Windows was not able to format the drive at this time?

i can boot into windows just fine, but ever since the last format just a couple of days ago i have been getting game crashes and weird errors, so i know that something is obviously wrong..

i just want to reformat and use the normal ide cable.

i also set the bios to default settings and then tried all of the above and got all the same errors.
any help would be appreciated

I have a Maxtor 80g also 8m cache. It puts out a high piched noise and my games started crashing and i have to format once a week or 2. Its sad., HD only comes with one year warranty and its been over a year, started happening to me about a month ago. I think maxtor is slipping, drives arent as good as they used to be for me.

Get a windows 98 boot disk and use fdisk to remove the c: drives partition. Then boot off your Windows XP cd and let XP create a new partition.

ps. You should never have to do a low level format... I can't believe you did that 15 times to your drive

I did some research on Low Level Formatting Maxtor drives and I got this from the www.maxtor.com knowledge base:

How to obtain a utility to low level format (write zeros) an ATA / IDE hard drive.

Question
How can I obtain a utility to low level format my Maxtor ATA / IDE hard drive?

!!Warning!! Low Level formatting the drive is data destructive. All information on the hard drive will be lost.

Answer
You cannot perform a true "factory" low-level format on your Maxtor and Quantum® ATA hard drive. The servo, sector layout, and defect management information contained in the low-level format is designed to last the life of the drive. This information and the way it is written cannot be duplicated in any way outside of the factory.

However, you can use utilities such as PowerMax (version 3.3 or newer) or MaxBlast 3 to purge the drive of all data, a corrupted master boot record, a boot block virus, or to clear the drive of any recoverable bad sectors or bad clusters.

To perform a non-factory low-level format using PowerMax please select the Write Disk Pack option.

To perform a non-factory low-level format using MaxBlast 3 please select the Zero-Fill Drive option located under "Utilities".

Note: High capacity drives take longer to complete. Allow sufficient time to complete the test. Several hours to overnight may be needed. A full Low Level Format remains the most effective test for a drive with intermittent problems.
