hard drive problem?

Posted something similiar in the psu section, was suggested that I have a hd about to fail.

here is whats going on:

While running, every so often i hear a sound from one hd that sounds like it is powering down and up again. Also, a few times the computer has refused to boot, giving me a message abouty a non-system disk. After disconnecting and reconnecting the drives, I was able to get it to boot again.

I started running SMARTMon, but it says everything is aok, even when it makes the noise? Any better things I can do to test if i have a bad drive? Ive got a brand new 120GB WD ready to go, but I dont know which drive is bad if any???

Anybody have any insight?

Link to your thread on the PSU/What PSU do you have installed in there? Also, what's the drive in question...that would be nice to know o_0

Post as much info as you can, including your BIOS version, anything you can think of. The more info the better (well, as long as we can sift through it all)

I am leaning towards the drive becomign flaky because of poor current from the PSU. That is my best guess with the info you have provided at present. Unfortunately, the drive will probably have to be replaced, but depending on your situation it may make sense to upgrade the PSU as well.

Good call on checking out the PSU though, usually it's the other way around - I sned guys htat post here first to the PSU forum ;)

Edited above to include link.

PSU is crappy raidmax 420W.

Drive is a Maxtor 60GB or a WD 120GB.

Bios is v1.02 i think.

I have a 500W Fortron AX500A on its way.
 
Have you checked the molex connectors going to the drives? After a while they "wear out" and do not make good contact. If it is just bend them a bit smaller with a thin flat screwdriver.

If its not its time to rip out your cd-rw/dvdrw/tape drive/spare hdd. :(
 
I just switched the molex connector to one of the drives...ill see if that makes a difference. Problem is its so intermittent, its hard to troubleshoot.
 
Well, its been about 19 hrs since i switched that connector, and no noise or errors so far...so maybe that was the problem.
