It looks like right now might be a good time to grab a few extra hard drives before prices go back up. Besides, you can never really have to much hard drive space. Right?

Average pricing of notebook hard drives tumbled, falling to US$53 in the third quarter of 2007, from $86 in the same period during the previous year. Desktop hard drive prices fell to $51 in the third quarter of 2007, compared to $52.75 the previous year, according to the survey.

Any recommendations on deals? Lol..

Seriously though, what is up with this line?
Solid-state drives (SSDs), purported by many to be future replacement of hard drives,{...}

What other evolution of storage medium is out there and remotely competitive? ISO chips? Crystals? I vaguely remember someone talking about 'holographic storage', but from what I read it was many years out from a market competitive option.

*shrug* I guess I'll go lurk the 'hot deals' area, and start hoarding drives for a home server or nas.

The only thing new about that is the lifespan specs.
50 years for hard drive data and 10 for SSD?
While most of us are not going to be archiving our data, the fact that SSD "only" last 10 years is yet another strike against it.
SSD still looks like it would be good for boot drives (50G-100G or so) but gosh DARN it those prices have to drop somehow.

For the study, prices were measured on a disk basis, not per gigabyte, Chander said.
No use buying more than you need. Price per gigabyte is constantly falling. I don't ever remember hard drives prices ever going up the way memory prices sometimes do, and even that is temporary before they plummet again.
