Hard Drive Positioning

does mounting a hard drive in any fashion other than horizontally effect its performance, or can it damage the drive?

apparently, it does not matter, at least for WD drives, if Mike's research was correct.

I remember reading from some drive manufacturer's website that it is not a good idea to mount a hard drive at an angle greater than 20-30 degrees (unless it's 90 degrees). I'm not sure if that applies to newer drives though.
